Bells will ring out in Falkirk for nuclear weapons treaty

Falkirk Christ Church will be ringing its bells to celebrate the United Nations passing the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

The treaty, which comes into force on Friday, has been signed and ratified by 51 countries, which is enough to make it an international law – meaning, from this month, countries like the UK and the USA which possess nuclear weapons will be acting illegally.

The bells marking the passing of the treaty will ring out from noon at Falkirk Christ Church, in Kerse Lane.

Falkirk campaigner Dr Richard Dyer said: “I’m sure many people in Scotland are embarrassed to be part of a nation that has these terrible weapons of mass destruction.”

Last weekend a nuclear convoy passed through central and southern Scotland – including the nearby city of Stirling – over the weekend heading for the the Royal Naval Armaments Depot at Coulport adjacent to the Clyde Submarine Base at Faslane.
