Text of the week

I love this time of year, as the daylight stretches further and further into the evening, and

soon the clocks change and we put the darkness of winter behind us and look forward to the

summer.

I’m often reminded, when we reset the clock, that the entry of Jesus Christ into human history actually reset the calendar! Whatever view of Christ you take, there is no denying that the calendar was reset by his birth – which itself is an acknowledgment of the significance of his life and accomplishments.

We reset the clocks to make better use of the light, and Christ reset the calendar to shine his own light into the darkness of sin and degradation; to give us the chance to step out of

the darkness and into the light; and to assure us that the light he ignited (the sure and

certain hope he offers through his death and resurrection) will never burn out or even be

dimmed.

An old hymn tells us that “many kinds of darkness in this world are found”. It defines these

as “sin and want and sorrow”. Much of that is inescapable, but it’s those who walk in

Christ’s light who begin to experience now the wholeness that God intends for us.

Isn’t it time to step into the light?
