“How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news.” (Isa. 52 v. 7)
When I was 12-years-old, I can remember the postman, Mr McKay, coming to our house with a
telegram. He waited until my mother had opened it. The message was that my grandfather, who
had gone on his first overseas holiday to Canada, had died suddenly.
I can remember it said “please inform your side of the family”.
This was not good news. In fact when we were clearing out my mother’s papers after she died, that telegram was still there.
Not many people had telephones then, so the postman’s feet brought news whether good or bad. Sometimes the steps would be heavy and sometimes light.
My text of the week says “how beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news”.
The verse also reminds us of proclaiming peace, bringing good tidings and proclaiming salvation.
The peace comes because a peaceful settlement has been made between God and humanity.
Christians celebrate that at Easter when they think of Jesus dying on the cross.
That is what the “proclaiming salvation” is all about and it is “good tidings”.
The text ends with “your God reigns”.
He can reign in our lives and I feel I have to inform you of this – just like the telegram said.
