The angel said to Mary, “You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.” (Luke 1:31)

How are the Christmas preparations going? We are now well into Advent, the time when we prepare for the coming of the Lord.

The thing is he has already come, long ago that first Christmas, but this is a time when we also remember that one day he will come again. Meantime we live and we celebrate this wonderful time of year which is really a birthday celebration, Jesus’ birthday. Imagine what Mary must have felt as she prepared for the birth of her son. Because this time of year is so busy it can be easy to forget the One who is at the heart of our celebrations, Jesus himself.

Without Christ the word “Christmas” would be meaningless and without Christ the celebrations we have become rather meaningless too; without Christ, all we are preparing for is a rather large, self-indulgent party.

Let’s choose to celebrate Christmas with due restraint rather than extravagance and remember the Christ child who calls us to a new kind of loving and living.

Why not join your local Church as your community looks forward to Christmas?
