The resurgence of vinyl has been acclaimed by music lovers and record shop owners alike.

However, its commercial rebirth may have coincided with its spiritual death, as new figures have revealed that Sainsbury’s is the top stockist of vinyl albums.

The new generation of record buyers has been bolstered by hipsters, meaning that any savvy stockist will place records in the same aisle as the beard oil. But I’m not even sure, do hipsters shop at supermarkets or do they get their quinoa at the local organic market?

Of course, there was a time when Woolies was the place to buy your Top 40 singles – but that was when dinosaurs (Zep, Floyd) roamed the earth. The seven-inchers were beside the cookers in the local electrical retailers, or through the back of the newsagents.

However, there’s evidence that the generation gap may be closing. Oasis are the middle-aged man’s karaoke choice, beating the Beatles and Blur, while Ed Sheeran – the Billy Bragg for the blank generation – is now the most played act on radio.

Which suggests that youngsters may not always be the ones with the street cred.

But if it comes on 12-inch black plastic, you’ll find it beside the spuds.
