Strathcarron hospice column: A very therapeutic service

Over many years, complementary therapy has been an accepted form of treatment in addition to conventional medicine for people with all sorts of medical conditions and illnesses.

Here at Strathcarron Hospice we have embraced many different complementary techniques which aim to help relaxation, physically and emotionally, offering calm and comfort at difficult times.

Relaxation of both the body and the mind can be an effective way of releasing much of the anxiety, stress and tension people face during the day to day challenges of living with a terminal illness. anxiety can lead to problems such as a disturbed sleep pattern, poor concentration, mood swings and low appetite.

It is also well documented that these same people can experience worse levels of symptoms such as pain, nausea and fatigue as a result of their anxious state.

Strathcarron Hospice has a team of complementary therapists supported by volunteers who provide an number of therapies such as massage and reflexology.

These treatments are not only available to all in-patient and day-care patients but to all their main carers as well as a way of offering support to them with the often stressful situation they find themselves in. Our fully qualified therapists also provide training for our volunteer befrienders so they can give gentle hand massage when out visiting people in their own homes.

“When I am lying here, I feel as if there is nothing wrong with me.” This was a comment made recently by a patient following a massage of face and head.

The Strathcarron team proudly stand behind ‘‘Making Every Moment Count’’ for our patients and their families.
