Sophie's Diary: No need to remind us of the grave dangers officers are in

Two people, who were doing nothing more than their jobs, were purposely reversed into while questioning someone in Knightswood, leaving them both hospitalised.

These two officers woke up at who knows what time and left their homes and their families for an exhausting shift that lasts as long as a piece of string, dealing with whatever is thrown at them.

The police do not get nearly enough credit and the news that two officers were almost killed in the line of duty is truly heartbreaking.

Growing up with a parent in the force isn’t easy. No, if I get arrested I won’t be let off the hook and yes, I am dreading the moment when I’m on a night out and I bump into my parent!

Don’t get me wrong, these are both obvious set backs but they’re feeble in comparison to some of the bigger problems we as a family sometimes face.

Who knows when my brother or I will next get to see our mum and dad at the same time, in the same room?

Who knows when we’ll all get to go on holiday together again, let alone if we’ll even get time to go abroad at all?

We’ve made a lot of sacrifices as a family because of the line of work my parents are in and we don’t need reminding of the grave danger that comes with the job.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that our boys (and girls) in the force are human, just like everyone else.

They all have lives, families, people off-shift who care about them. Knowing they put their lives on the line every day doesn’t bear thinking about.

My thoughts are with the families of the two officers in Glasgow – I can’t even imagine what they’re going through.
