Sophie's column: Snowmageddon has done us all a good turn

I know this time last Thursday I was feeling a little more negative about the weather conditions outside.

In my defence, I was snowed in at my friend’s flat in the middle of Glasgow, our cheerleading competition had just been cancelled and the heating was broken.

So, to be fair, I was a bit down in the dumps for a justified reason, I think!

But to say I was pleasantly surprised by the positive turn of events the following few days took would be a huge understatement.

On a personal note, spending time mucking about in the snow with my family and boyfriend was absolutely fantastic.

For the first time in my life, the snow reached my knees, we built an igloo and made more snow angels than I could count.

It brought us closer together as a family too – when you’re cooped up with your parents and sibling for such a long period of time, it really does help you realise how much they mean to you.

But probably the most heart-warming thing about the weather was seeing neighbours and communities pulling together to help each other.

People worked together to ensure that everyone was safe and well-fed when they couldn’t get out.

Kids dug snow out from their school playgrounds, tractors dug out cars in car parks, even the Canalside hired a plough to make sure our customers could safely get to and from our building.

It was the first time in a long, long while that I’ve seen communities pull together so positively.

And I think it’s done us all some good. So next time I won’t be so quick to judge the weather. Roll on the next snow-in, I say!
