There’s a cosy Celtic charm to Another Country that’s warmly engaging.
The 29th studio album from raspy voiced Rod Stewart has a Gaelic-folk feel to it and his directness about songwriting is a bonus when it comes to matters of the heart, something this album has in abundance.
On the opening track, ‘‘Love Is’’, where banjo and fiddle create a folksy air, it’s sharp and straight to the point and the folk-rock football anthem ‘‘We Can Win’’ will be, erm, a winner with fellow football fans – especially Celtic supporters – that helped inspired the track, and will no doubt go down a storm when played live.
There’s a Springsteen-esque, spirit-raising quality to Walking in the Sunshine, and if Way Back Home doesn’t make you well up, I’d check for vital signs and call an ambulance for good measure.
The latest offering confirms that Rod can still deliver a top notch album.
He continues to show his range and talent and is a rather pleasant surprise to anyone who was never much of a fan in the past.
Another Country is released October 30 .
