Remember, keep your bag close

Last week we launched our festive safety campaign in the Falkirk area with additional patrols being deployed during the daytime and at night.

There is also ongoing work with businesses, communities and the pubic in offering safety advice both for the home, night-time party season and home security.

With the increase in shoppers looking for presents, officers are aware that, historically, criminals can target shoppers who are distracted while juggling all the challenges of organising Christmas. One of the areas which can be targeted is purse theft and some simple steps will make it much harder for the criminal to target shoppers. Be aware of your surroundings and keep your handbag and wallet close. Keep handbags closed between purchases and, where possible, wear your handbag across your shoulder with the zip/clasp in sight. Do not leave handbags or jackets in shopping trolleys and then leave them unattended while you select other purchases as this can also be targeted by thieves.

Officers are working with the retail community who will also play their part in staying vigilant and reducing the opportunity for theft. Together we can make it harder for the criminals to be successful when the shops are busy. Remember, keep your bag closed and keep it close.
