Ready, steady, cook!

A group of budding masterchefs cooked up a storm when they created their own pizzas in a culinary challenge.

Beavers from the 27th Bonnybridge colony travelled to Denny Scout Centre to take advantage of the souped up kitchen facilities there.

The six to eight-year-olds received their masterclass from chef and Beaver mum Rosa Maccalli who put them through their paces as they worked towards their cook badge.

As well as telling them the history of the pizza, Rosa helped them create their dishes with their own choice of toppings.

The youngsters’ work didn’t end there as they then each made chocolate crispy cakes and topped off the evening with a fruit smoothie drink.

27th’s Group Scout leader Margaret Plank said: “It was very kind of Rosa to help us and to do so much work. The Beavers had a great time and were able to take their food home.”

WHILE the majority of people are familiar with Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, they may be less aware of the next section – Explorer Scouts are young people aged between 14 and 18 years.

With guidance from unit leaders, they are encouraged to lead themselves, design their own programme and work towards top awards. Explorers offers the chance to be involved in camps and expeditions both at home and abroad and activities such as mountaineering, parascending and off-shore sailing.

It also offers the chance to be a part of the Young Leaders’ Scheme which develops leadership skills and sense of responsibility by helping to run meetings for younger sections.

An Explorer Scout unit and a Scout group may work together under a partnership agreement which should set out clearly the links between the unit and the group, arrangements for communication, use of equipment, facilities and resources.

Within Falkirk District there are six units based in Falkirk, Larbert, Bonnybridge, Bo’ness and Torwood.
