Over the past couple weeks, officers have attended a number of thefts from vehicles which have been left open by their owners.

These include vehicles that have been left open for a short period of time which has provided easy access to the opportunist thief and resulted in personal and valuable property being removed.

Officers are working hard to identify those people responsible but, to make it harder for them, I’m appealing for readers to take more care when securing their vehicles.

Remember, it only takes a few seconds to open a door and remove property left in open view.

There are many things you can do to prevent thefts from your vehicle including locking your car every time you get out. And don’t leave anything on display.

If you have a sat nav, hide the cradle and take the system with you. And if you have personal correspondence, take it with you.

Don’t give others access to important personal information.

Finally if you have an alarm, then closing and locking the vehicle will set it and assist in reducing theft.
