Paying the price of vandalism

IT can be financially tough running a Scout group. The young members pay their subs every month; take part in various fundraising activities and occasionally groups are successful in grant applications.

From that badges, neckties, insurance, capitation, art supplies, replacing equipment and subsidised trips are paid for.

So when windows are broken that money has to be found. And when the cost is £300+ for each replacement, the drain on resources is great.

The 89th Stenhousemuir group has been the victim of at least two alleged acts of vandalism in the last three weeks. Three large glass windows have been smashed.

Group Scout leader John Dick said: “We’ll have to pay for the repair out of the subs which means the kids are paying for it because we have no other means of funding.”

As well as the Scout group, a fitness club also uses the hall four times a week.

If you have any information contact the police on 101.

The 9th Dunipace youngsters took part in the sponsored event at Barrwood in aid of the Town Break charity in Stirling as part of the Million Hands Project.

The six to eight-year-olds raised £424 which was presented to the charity. The Beavers then entertained the club members with a couple of songs before taking part in a few games.

Beaver leader Alan Nairn said: “We intend to keep this connection going over the next few months and hopefully arrange future events to help with the community involvement.”

In order to tackle a lack of diversity the board would particularly welcome applications from women and black minority ethnic candidates who are underrepresented.

A recent audit identified the Board would especially benefit from experience in IT, finance, change and project management, property development and property management. Nominations must be submitted online no later than Friday, September 11, 2017. Full details available at: www.mi-nomination.com/ss2017.
