No matter what girls wear, they are not asking for it...

It's that time of year again, where my social media accounts are awash with dresses, limousines and all things sparkly.

We’re headed straight into prom season at full speed and, by the sounds of it, all my younger friends can’t wait.

Looking back a few years, I remember writing an article about the struggles of finding a prom dress and the pressure to look good for just one evening.

But there’s nothing more rewarding than finding the perfect gown and then getting dolled up to celebrate your achievements.

Finding a dress that I felt comfortable in was a must and is an essential element to any girl come prom night.

However, according to a story which I read in a US magazine, one American school has stripped girls of that right altogether.

Picture this: you’ve been hunting for weeks, months perhaps, to find the gown that’s right for you and, finally, you come across a dress which makes you feel like a princess.

You go to school the next day excited with your new purchase, but your high is short-lived.

As you walk in the front doors, there are posters everywhere of gowns, not too dissimilar from yours, with statements in bold which read: “Does your gown look like this? Then you’re not welcome at our prom”.

Why? Because there’s too much shoulder, a little bit of back or your curves are on show for the world to see.

I must have missed the part when schools decided prom was actually an opportunity for the sexual exploitation of girls.

What happened to teaching women of all ages that, regardless of how they dress, they are not asking for it? Girls should be able to wear what makes them feel comfortable, without it being classed as too sexy.
