Letter from the editor: School plan has merit but also pitfalls

However, I can imagine some heads and classroom teachers throwing up their hands in horrors at some of the proposals.

Many years ago, I remember when Terry Christie was manager at Stenhousemuir FC, a job he combined with his role as rector of Musselburgh Grammar, he once told me that the only two things he knew anything about were football and education.

But then he added: “And the majority of the Scottish population believe they know everything about both!”

And there lies my fears for those running our schools, people getting involved who think they know more than the 
experts.

Many of the ideas contained in the action plan sound perfectly reasonable – encourage parents to become more involved by volunteering in schools, breaking down barriers so parents are happy to engage with teachers and training for parent councils.

I am the only one who wonder why these things aren’t already happening in ever school across the country?

Of course, I appreciate that there will always be parents, no matter how much teachers try and how many initiatives are implemented who will not become involved.

Then again there will be those parents who will sign up for everything ... and want to run the show.
