Letter from the Editor: Nostalgia is coming of age

That may be true when you were in your teens or twenties but if, like me, you’re rapidly approaching 50 you’ll find yourself fondly recalling personal events from the 1970s and ‘80s and recoiling in horror when you realise you are now working beside people born in the late ’90s.

That was brought home to me just the other week when I happened upon an article in one of sister papers looking back to the Duke of Edinburgh’s visit to Fife in 1976. I remember standing in a large crowd in Cupar town centre waiting for his arrival and cursing our luck theat the Queen had been taken ill otherwise she would have been accommpanying him that day.

This week The Falkirk Herald is launching its new Retro section - six pages packed with pictures and stories from years gone by.

While the ever-popular Looking Back column written by local historian Ian Scott will continue in its usual format, the remainder of the pages will be devoted to a specific year ... and this week we’re looking back to 1970.

I was involved in putting together some of the articles but I’m not sure it was a great use of my time as I was constantly being drawn into the pages of our files to read another story which caught my eye.

It was certainly a busy time with hotels springing up across the area and decimalisation.

But what struck me most is how attitudes have changed ... have a look at the section and you’ll see just what I mean!
