Get out and enjoy the final few days of the Fringe if you can, says Jonathon Reilly

If you want to watch a film you can do so at the cinema, on your television, laptop, tablet or even your smartphone.

Should you wish to listen to some music, there are numerous streaming platforms and applications at your fingertips on the aforementioned devices, while there are of course still the more traditional options like vinyls and CDs.

That being said, I’m firmly of the opinion that nothing quite compares to live entertainment and a recent outing to the Edinburgh Festival only reaffirmed my belief.

I generally tend to opt for comedy gigs when the Fringe comes around, however, this year, I decided to switch things up and went to see a mind reader, a hypnotist and Trainspotting Live. Two of the three were phenomenal.

The mind reader, Colin Cloud, and the live take on Irvine Welsh’s gritty novel both impressed and astounded in equal measure. To clarify, I wasn’t paid to review either!

Audience interaction is naturally an integral part of such performances and these two were as good as I’ve seen in that regard. They really need to be seen to be believed.

I’m as big a fan as the next person of taking in a film with surround sound at the cinema, binge-watching a series online or listening to music on Spotify, but nothing beats the wow factor of a live show done well, whether it’s theatrical, a sports fixture or a concert.

Given there are just days remaining of the Edinburgh Festival, I’d encourage anyone who hasn’t yet been to head through to the capital to sample the atmosphere and see what you’re missing.
