Football enthusiasm across age groups

As I mentioned last week, BB football arrangements still often seem to be to the fore at meetings. Although not my '˜'˜thing' I should appreciate from family ties just how the sport impacts on so many; even to the extent of trying to arrange BB calendar events away from Falkirk home games! However the current mini cup run must have sparked off an enthusiasm for I can report on a couple of such recent activities.

The Junior Section five-a-side football competition took place at Carronvale Sports Hall on Saturday, January 20. Despite poor weather a total of nine teams representing six sections took part. Altogether 60 boys took part in an enjoyable competition which was played in a very sporting manner. Winners were from 1st Larbert (West Church) with runners up 1st Camelon (Camelon Church) and 1st Polmont (Brightons Church and 2nd Larbert (Old Church) sharing third spot. Others taking part were 5th Larbert (Baptist & Grace Churches) and 8th Falkirk (Bainsford Church).

On the same day, eight boys and four parents and supporters from 2nd Larbert made their way to Edinburgh for a further round of the Company Section national (junior) five-a-side competition. They were drawn against teams from 4/5th Dundee; 44th Glasgow; 25th Stirling and the hosts 65th Edinburgh. As the teams gathered it seemed this might be an uphill struggle as many of the other teams dwarfed the Larbert boys! With three games played and two wins and a loss, it meant their last match against 25th Stirling had to be a win or a draw for progression to the next round. After 12 nail biting minutes football, which saw the boys dig deep, they secured the needed draw. Being second on the day allowed them to progress to the Scottish finals which will be a bit closer to a ‘home’ match scheduled for March 4 at Grangemouth Sports Complex. These reports of the activities I earlier indicated augur well for success.
