Death of former Denny captain

Following the death of his wife, Mary, two weeks before, John Marshall died on November 14, after some time of illness.

John was captain of 1st Denny and Dunipace Company (Westpark Church) for many years before retiring in 1995. Our thoughts and prayers are with friends and family. George Barrowman, the present captain of that Company had his boys at the first round of the national Masterteam quiz at Dunblane on November 12 where they met companies from Stirling, Dunblane, Newport/Wormit and Dundee.

After a high-scoring contest, Denny progressed to the next round along with Dunblane and Newport as high scoring ‘‘losers’’.

The team of question-master and markers was made up of members of the Falkirk and District Stedfast Association. All three of these teams were in last year’s Scottish final.

The highest scoring team from all the first round ties was from 1st Polmont (Brightons Church). 1st Denny and Dunipace now progress to a second round tie hosted by 4/5 Kilmarnock on December 10.

The others at that venue will be 4th Dunfermline, 5th Larbert (Grace and Baptist Church), 2nd Polmont and 1st Stewarton. Armistice Day saw BB boys throughout the country parading as a mark of respect to those fallen and injured in service of their country.

Sgt Joe Gillespie from 2nd Larbert (Old Church) attended the Festival of Remembrance in Falkirk Town Hall on the Saturday evening before parading the Falkirk and District Battalion’s Queen’s Colour.

The Battalion wreath was laid at Falkirk war memorial at Dollar Park by boys from 3rd Falkirk (People’s Church). Joe’s own Company paraded to the war memorial at the Dobbie Hall, Larbert, along with boys from 3rd Larbert (East Church) before returning to their own church.

At that service the boys again took part with another four youth organisations, helping to lay poppies at a wooden cross memorial.
