Take Note: Turning sexism up to eleven

In the real world they’d be viewed as crass, insensitive rock dinosaurs but of course the Tap weren’t even a particularly far-fetched impression of a sexist metal band stuck in the 1970s. Times have very much changed, as anyone watching the gap-ridden re-runs of Top of the Pops will realise.

Adele is something of a feminist icon thanks to her success without compromise. She stands accused of normalising sexual harassment. Her lyric “I must have called a thousand times” was cited by the University of Oklahoma’s Gender and Equality Centre. Presumably The Proclaimers will also be called out for their Terminator-style persistence in walking “500 Miles”.

Maroon 5 were also mentioned for their cannibal-sympathising “Baby, I’m preying on you tonight. Hunt you down, eat you alive”. (No, the Oklahoma study actually did quote that).

Madonna is similarly under the PC cosh, banned from the Philippines for disrespecting their ﬂag, though given that she was recently spotted dressed as a clown trundling around on a tricycle she may have an insanity plea in the offing.
