People in Falkirk going nowhere for the weekend

Well, we’re over one week into the big coronavirus lockdown now and I have to say I’m still finding it all rather surreal.
Children across the country have been learning at home due to the pandemic.Children across the country have been learning at home due to the pandemic.

One of the strangest things for me was my experience over the weekend.

Normally on a Friday night after work I’ll come in, cook dinner, get out of my work gear into my comfy clothes and pour myself a glass of wine.

And that’s my cue to sit back and relax.

However last Friday, having been working at home all week there wasn’t that same feeling of ‘it’s the weekend’.

With little else to do of an evening and with no where to go I’d already had a wee glass on a couple of other school nights.

I’d already been sitting around in comfier than usual clothes.

I knew that any plans for socialising over the next few days were out of the window as we are all following the government guidelines and staying at home.

I’d be spending the majority of my Saturday and Sunday looking at the same walls I had been looking at from Monday to Friday. We all would.

So, that usual Friday night feeling – you know the one when you’re exhausted but excited for a few days without work – was missing and the weekend seemed to be something of an anti-climax.

Goodness knows how we’ll all be feeling if this lockdown continues to drag on for months as some have suggested. There will be many more weekends when we just won’t know what to do with ourselves.

Although I guess it will make us all appreciate our weekends – and our freedom – more when this is all over.

I have to say I’ve been making good use of all the technology that’s available these days to keep in touch with people.

FaceTime is wonderful for keeping in touch with Emma and her two. It makes such a difference being able to see their faces rather than just hearing their voices down the phone.

I have to say Sophie and Jack have both been very grown up about the whole situation.

I’m sure if we had been in this situation with their mother when she was their age we would have had a battle to try and get her to do school work. It was hard enough at times to get her to do her regular homework.

However by all accounts, they seem willing to learn – at least for now.

There’s not been any arguments trying to get them to tackle the tasks set by their teachers.

We’ll see how long that lasts!

The volume of work that is being sent home to them or posted online is incredible.

It’s like a proper day at school for them, just from the comfort of their own living room.

So, at least even in this bizarre situation we find ourselves in they are continuing to learn.

It’s just a real shame that they can’t meet up with their pals. I think they are both really starting to miss the company of their friends and classmates.

But there will be plenty of time for catching up with them once this has all passed.

Remember, stay at home and stay safe.
