Looking forward to a ‘new normal’

End of session is marked by the opportunity for battalion council to sum up the work done and deal with matters arising or to be decided for next session. Often by that time of year too few attend, perhaps a sign of things running smoothly or just breathing a sigh of relief having got to the end of the session and looking forward to the summer break. In any event, this year things have been very different and no possibility of any face-to-face assembly is possible. However, particularly through a lot of work by headquarters facilitating ‘‘virtual’’ work for members at home, things have been still moving forward for companies who have the expertise to keep in contact with their members, parents, officers and helpers. The latest directions indicated by headquarters for preparation in moving gradually towards the increase in face-to-face meetings will need to be considered as different companies will have varied criteria for being able so to do. These may vary with suitability of premises, to comply with hygiene needs or social distancing; the understanding of all staff and members as to what needs to be observed; numbers that can gather at any given time; what activities will be possible; how to carry out required risk assessments; what permissions need to be obtained … and so the list goes on. Consequently it is proposed to have an on-line Zoom battalion council meeting to try to address such issues. No easy task! Helpfully the HQ hase produced and circulated a video presentation which, if viewed in advance, should simplify the business of the meeting. The onus at all times is how to proceed with safety of all involved, ensure this emphasis is conveyed to parents and managers of premises are kept in the loop to ensure regulations are and can be observed. So with concerted effort, prayer and a lot of hard work we can again enjoy BB fellowship from which so many generations have benefited.
