Column: Putting your affairs in order

In many cases the deceased person has lived a long life, and death comes as no surprise, or is caused by a terminal illness such as cancer or chronic heart disease, which runs its course over a period of weeks, months or even years.

Whatever the cause and however well prepared relatives and friends think they are, the death itself is invariably a shock, even when it is not a surprise, and the emotions which follow are no less deep or painful.

Putting our affairs in order can lift the burden and ease the pain for bereaved loved ones.

This includes making (or updating) a will or making financial and domestic arrangements which safeguard the future of those left behind.

Something as simple as placing bank accounts and domestic utility bills in the name of the surviving partner can all in making a difficult situation less painful and difficult.
