Canvas camping rejected for lodge life

What do you do if you have a lifetime history of canvas camping and the proposed recommended site proves not to be financially viable?

What then do you do when your plan B is already booked? Regroup! Think out of the historical box and go residential!

That was the plight of 7th Falkirk (Baptist Church) this year when Seahouses and Kirkham camp sites had to be rejected. However, the new warden at the BB Centre at Kirkham which I reported on recently in connection with an earlier stay by 1st Larbert (West Church) came up trumps when he found space in one of his two lodges.

So it was that 15 boys and their officers took off on July 15 to this new experience. No daily tent inspections, but room inspections became the order of the day with the domestic novelty of a vacuum cleaner in use at camp.

Once settled in normal service was more or less resumed and soon the boys were enjoying archery as well as the more traditional volleyball and rounders. Inter-company competition was enjoyed with the Irish boys encamped there.

Trips out included a visit to Old Trafford and the Trafford Centre. Closer to the site were visits to Blackpool’s Stanley Park as well as The Dungeon.

At the Pleasure Beach, the smallest boy was also deemed to be the bravest as he took on ‘‘The Big One’’ – apparently the scariest ride on site!

What do you do when you are at your BB camp near Morcambe with a little time to kill? You go to visit 7th Falkirk’s site.

That was the thinking of Bill Mochrie of 8th Falkirk (Bainsford Church) which camp I’ve previously mentioned.

No canvas to pack. A bonus on departure as the rain poured which would have necessitated lengthy unpacking and drying. Well it’ll still be there for next year.
