Can't beat the physical evidence of the love I have for writing

It wasn't until recently that I realised just how strong the love for print journalism in Scotland truly is.

Coming home from university the other day, I jumped in a random taxi with a fifty-something year old man who I had a lengthy conversation with about print media, the future for it and how much of an affect it has in our every day life.

The truth of the matter is that yes, print media may be on the decline, but I truly believe there is still something of a future for the old-fashioned newspaper.

I’ve always loved to read and enjoy nothing more than sitting on the sofa, nestled in between two pillows and a blanket with a good book.

There’s something very nostalgic about holding a hard copy novel in your hands and getting completely lost in a storyline. I believe something similar happens when you sit down with a morning cup of tea to read a newspaper.

The majority of news I consume comes largely from online sources these days and it’s likely the same for most people

But there is a touch of satisfaction when you read a piece of print, whether it be a 60 word news in brief or a full length feature article.

Needless to say, it’s a very traditional sense of belonging.

Although my future career will more than likely not be in print media because of the rapid increase of online news corporations, I still relish the idea that I write for a weekly print publication.

To have a hard copy of a piece of writing I’ve produced is physical evidence of the love I have for writing and I like to think many other journalists feel the same.

Who knows how long the newspaper will stick around. But one thing is certain – my conversation with the taxi driver reassured me that it’s not only me who enjoys the simple pleasure of settling down with a newspaper every once in a while.
