Camping it up at Barrwood

The Bonnybridge group took over the Barrwood for a weekend camp combined with a day of land and water activities.

Around 140 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and North Star Explorers, their siblings and parents were at the event.

And while most of the Cubs had a night away under their belt it was the first time under canvas for all of them.

They were tested as soon as they arrived at camp as they had to pitch their own tents, again a first for them, before they joined everyone for the family day.

Everyone had the opportunity to go caving, practise their archery, test their fitness on the obstacle course, toast marshmallows, pillow fight, play laser tag, tackle the inflatable on the reservoir and paddle around in the kayaks and canoes.

Parents were also encouraged to take to the water with and without their children.

As the afternoon drew to a close there were investiture ceremonies for new members to each of the sections, as well as new leaders in the cubs and scouts.

It was rounded off with a campfire and various songs, each louder than the last.

Group Scout Leader Margaret Plank, said: “I would like to thank all the parents for supporting us in our family day. The leaders worked hard to ensure everyone had a good time and we were very lucky with sunshine and blue skies.”

A WIDE range of funding opportunities have been made available through Scouts Scotland.

A review during the last few months into its development fund, which supports projects that grow, improve and help make Scouting more inclusive across Scotland, has produced a variety of new funds. They include:

• Start-up funding for new sections across Scotland

• A development project fund for groups and districts

• A development project fund for Regions and the SHQ Development Team

• Small grants for leaders to undertake training and qualifications, for example in adventurous activities

There is around £50,000 per annum available.
