BB Notes: End of session activities

Bill Stevenson, BB director for Scotland, reminds us spring is not only marked with re-growth but, in BB circles, parents' evenings where everyone sees the delight in the eyes of boys after winning a trophy or being presented with awards.

Parents get the opportunity to express how the BB continues to make a real difference in the lives of boys.

Already this year 3rd Falkirk have had their display on May 13 and 1st Grangemouth on May 6. 1st Camelon have their parents’ evening tomorrow (Friday) to which all parents, friends and former members are invited.

This repeating cycle of session activities depends on those willing to come forward and organise activities and events. There are few battalions offering so much by way of competitions and events, evidenced not only in this column but also by being asked to host national events. Occasionally an officer retires and, if no replacement steps forward, perhaps a competition or an activity is discontinued, lessening the BB experience.

Battalion president Daniel Green asks: ‘‘Are you the person who might just be able to spare some time to ensure this continuing heritage?’’

“Whom shall I send? Send me!” Some who have passed through the ranks and still occasionally help are members of the Falkirk and District Stedfast Association who meet regularly and have their end of session annual general meeting at Larbert West Church Hall this Sunday afternoon.

Having had their ‘camp’ (or their now softer option weekend away) earlier, they recently enjoyed a great afternoon out at Summerlee Heritage Park in Coatbridge, with its facilities which might benefit consideration for a junior section outing.

Educational, free of charge, hands-on, with insights into local history ... what more could be asked?
