BB Notes: Camping to comfortable weekends away

With companies having an Easter break, officers have a brief respite before the parents' night season.

Some older members from Falkirk and District Stedfast Association went on their annual ‘‘weekend away’’ to Carnoustie on March 18. Some, including the writer, recalled earlier years when camping at Carnoustie.

One tale was when 1st Larbert (West Church) had a combined camp with 1st Denny and Dunipace (Westpark Church) under the auspices of Arthur Coutts and John Deuchar.

The pride and joy of a Denny Officer was a shiny motorbike, secured each night in the marquee. One morning it was gone,
replaced with a Mini motor car! Panic soon gave way to smiles as the undercover operation of a neighbouring Glasgow company revealed a silent exchange during the cover of darkness.

“Boys will be boys” was the frequently used explanation in defence of BB boys by the Larbert captain.

Much less intrigue accompanied the Stedfast weekend with a ‘‘church parade’’ remaining the established practice of the intervening years.

With camping on the agenda, I have indications of 7th Falkirk (St James Church) off to Hawick; 8th Falkirk (Bainsford Church) and 2nd Bo’ness (St Andrews Church) similarly off to Lancaster and Seahouses respectively. Others, including 1st Grangemouth (Abbotsgrange Church) and 5th Larbert (Grace and Baptist Churches), are opting for Dalguise Centre in Perthshire. Any others? Do let me know to enable me to follow up with your camp adventure stories, for no matter how ordinary such trips seem, they are still exciting and full of anticipation.
