America what have you done in electing President Trump?

I am in a line of work where I should keep my political opinions to myself.

When I graduate, not only will I be an opinion writer but also a working journalist, where it’s crucial I provide a balanced outlook on issues. However, I feel I can make an exception this time.

I remember watching an episode of The Simpsons a while ago, not long before Trump announced he was running. Watching that blond-haired billionaire dictate to the people of America made my stomach turn, even then.

The creators of the programme said they issued the broadcast as a “warning to the people of America”.

Watching BBC News on Wednesday morning, the reaction from the UK and Europe was similar.

We are not clear of what this man’s policies will be, how he will interact with the rest of the world and how he plans to help rectify the strained relationship between the US and EU. At the time of writing, Angela Merkel hadn’t issued a statement but I am intrigued to hear what she has to say.

The most upsetting thing about Trump being elected is that we now have a man in power who appears to have few morals.

He has proven himself to be disrespectful to women; discourteous to certain races and publicly horrible to other human beings.

Not only have the people of America elected him as the figurehead for their country, but the children of the US have this man to look to as a role model.

How can we teach ethical principles to the children of tomorrow when they will be ruled by Trump, today?

A man who makes derogatory comments and has belittled so many now has power over all.

Donald Trump is the 45th president of the United States. America, what have you done?
