On Location at Blackness Castle ... but where's the Outlaw King?

The trailer for this blockbuster notched up 26 million views on Youtube in its first 24 hours - but the film, and its links to a raft of visitor sites, has yet to be played up by local or national tourism authorities.

In a flyer for the Blackness event, to be staged on September 1 and 2, normal ticket admission price (free to members) will introduce visitors to characters including Robert the Bruce and Mary Queen of Scots.

It also underlines the castle’s use in the hugely successful fantasy-history soap Outlander.

Blackness Castle has seen a major surge in visits because of its role as a location in Outlander ... but now it also stars in the biggest movie ever filmed in Scotland.

However it’s likely many visitors - set to be followed by new droves of international tourists - will be more interested in the castle’s starring role in the soon to be released 120million blockbuster The Outlaw King, starring Chris Pine as King Robert the Bruce.

The first trailer for the movie - filmed entirely in Scotland - was released this week and it premieres next month at the Toronto International Film Festival (general release November 9).

However despite the absence of any promotional mention of the castle’s role in the forthcoming epic there could be an early surge of visitors who have identified its importance for themselves.

Meanwhile anyone keen to gain an “early bird” tour of a prime Outlaw King location can win free entry by “liking” an entry on the Visit Falkirk Facebook site (dated August 22) - where there’s also a link to the Historic Environment Scotland details about the “on location” days.

The winner will be announced on Monday.
