The SNP Group on Falkirk Council has elected Cecil Meiklejohn as its new leader.
She replaces party veteran and Falkirk North colleague David Alexander who stepped down last month after 20 years in the job.
Mrs Meiklejohn, who was elected to the council in 2007, said: “I’m taking up the leadership of the group at an exciting time politically. The SNP is Falkirk district’s party of choice, outpolling Labour on May 3, and we can even build on that.
“There is not only real talent within the SNP Group but also vision and energy and my task is to harness these qualities.”
She also paid tribute to her predecessor, saying: “I have learned so much this last five years working closely with David. I know I have a massive pair of shoes to fill but I will give it my best shot.”
Councillor Alexander said: “I have watched Cecil grow from being a competent political activist with potential, into a polished local politician who has gained the respect of friend and foe alike. When I stood down I did so in the knowledge there was real quality waiting in the wings.”
The re-shuffle also sees Steven Jackson replacing Tom Coleman as depute leader and Steven Carleschi taking up the role of group secretary.
