Youngsters will be getting their very own Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) but not in the location originally planned.

Falkirk Council’s new playpark development was originally going to be sited at Head of Muir Primary School. But concerns were raised during the consultation process and it was then proposed to built it on land to the east of the Archibald Russell Centre, Haypark Road, Head of Muir.

However, after a planning site visit earlier this month and the subsequent safety concerns raised, it will now be moving five metres closer to the centre, away from nearby Denny Road.

At a meeting of the council’s planning committee last Thursday, members agreed to grant planning permission for the blue and yellow MUGA, which can be used for football, basketball and a range of other activities, in its new site.

There had been concern the original location of the facility could lead to safety problems, with balls escaping the area finding their way on to the road, potentially causing serious road traffic accidents.

According to the council there have been seven major injury road accidents in the past within 50 yards of that location.

Councillor Adrian Mahoney said: “I think the work which has been carried out by the applicant since the site visit, moving the pitch slightly away from the road, will make it much safer.”

In response to concerns raised at the site visit, the council’s amended proposals also saw an increase in the height of the eastern, northern and southern fencing panels of the MUGA from 0.99 metres to two metres and the extension of the fence to the corner of Denny Road and Haypark Road.

Objectors to the plans feared it would be a gathering place for youngsters, bringing associated problems of under-age drinking and anti-social behaviour, but the council stated the MUGA’s close proximity to housing would make it easy for residents and police patrols to monitor.

The MUGA will allow Dennyloanhead Youth Club to enjoy outdoor activities in a controlled environment, while out-of-school care organisations would also be able to use the facility.
