Maddiston business collapses under tons of snow

A FAMILY business has been wiped out by this month's arctic weather.

After almost 50 years, the owners of Parkhall Nursery in Maddiston have decided to call it a day after heavy snow caused tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Mary Whitelaw (75) and brother Andrew Woods (78) have made the sad decision to close down the business started by their late father half a century ago.

They said it would cost too much to replace the greenhouses and polytunnels which were destroyed by December's heavy snowfalls.

Mary said it was a blow, adding: "I never thought that it would all end like this."

The nursery in Vellore Road was opened by Joseph Woods on Easter Sunday 1961. His family all worked in the business which quickly built up a reputation for quality plants. People travelled from all over the district to make their purchases from them.
