Scotland’s outgoing Lord Advocate has said it is “inconceivable” one will not go ahead.

Replying to a letter from Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie asking for an update on the investigation, Frank Mullholland QC, said: “When all investigations are completed this case will be reported to the Crown Counsel for instruction as to what, if any, proceedings are appropriate.

“As with any sudden death case, the evidence will be analysed carefully and all options will be considered. I should add that, not withstanding a decision on criminal proceedings, I find it inconceivable that a fatal accident inquiry will not be held given the public concern over this tragedy.”

Lamara (25) was a passenger in a car being driven by her partner John (28) that went off the M9 near Bannockburn on July 5.

John was killed outright, but Lamara lay trapped until July 8 when police finally found the wreck and died in hospital four days later.
