Life-savers assembling

A campaign to place life-saving defibrillators in rural communities is gathering pace with more and more people being trained to use them.

Lifeguard Norrie Brown (57) and first aid instructor Victoria O’Neill (39) started the drive last year to have a Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) installed at Maddiston’s police station to increase the survival chances of someone who has suffered a heart attack if they fell ill in public.

The campaign has been so successful they now have two defibrillators and are currently fundraising to purchase the specially controlled cabinets needed to house them.

One is to be placed at Maddiston police station while the other will be at the Rumford service station area further down towards Falkirk.

Once they are in position Norrie and Victoria intend to keep fundraising to have more installed in the Maddiston, Rumford and Brightons areas, as well as further afield in the Braes.

Victoria said: “We have been in contact with like-minded people who wish to set up a similar scheme in the Shieldhill and California areas and we hope to work closely with them in the very near future.

“Our community Call Push Rescue training programme is now well under way with sessions regularly being held at Polmont Golf Club, Maddiston Community Centre and Brightons Community Centre.”
