Learning to drive is child's play

Children have been enjoying their very own driving lessons in a specially created car that allows them to grasp the basics of motoring.

The world’s first electric car developed for children, the Firefly, has allowed the Young Driver organisation to offer lessons specifically developed for the younger age group with the long term goal of increasing road safety.

Youngsters in Falkirk were able to have a session behind the wheel for the first time at Falkirk Stadium last weekend.

Lindsay Windsor-Smith, Firefly team operations manager, said: “This is all about safety. The youngsters learn to place the car, how to be aware of other cars on the road and recognise road signs. In later lessons we even show them how to parallel park.

“The feedback we have had from parents is great. We are giving these youngsters a head start, so they are familiar with driving before they go out into traffic on their lessons when they are older.”

Firefly team host Steven Sharp added: “It equips them with the skills they need before they go out on the road – it definitely gives them a head start.”

At the end of the sessions the children, including one happy seven-year-old Bowhouse Primary School pupil, were given a Young Driver “licence” to acknowledge their driving prowess.
