Bosses of the Lochgreen Playgroup in Slamannan Road have been told it could cost up to £10,000 to have the work done – sparking fears that unless it can raise the money it will have to shut.
Amanda Cunningham, ‘chairmum’ of the organisation that looks after dozens of youngsters every day is hoping the community might be able to help.
She said: “The portable building we use is 15 years old now and the flat roof has been patched up more than once, but the weather this winter has now damaged it and the ceiling below.
“We’ve now been told it really should be replaced with a pitched roof, but been quoted between £8000 and £10,000 to have the work done and that’s money we simply don’t have. Our insurance has covered the cost of repairs in the past, but now it’s wear and tear due to old age and they can’t help.

“After 46 years of providing childcare and play for the local community we are looking at a very uncertain future.
“We have started a fundraising campaign and parents have promised to do what they can, but raising £10,000 really won’t be possible unless we can attract wider financial support.”
The playgroup, which employs two part-time staff, will continue to run until the summer holidays but without the money it needs will be forced to close in August.
Amanda added: “Everybody who has attended Lochgreen agrees the group is fantastic and the children love coming here, but we now need help if it’s a resource that is not to be lost.”
Falkirk Council is unable to help, but advised the playgroup about possible sources of grant funding.
