Alan Young (38) set up The Margo Young Foundation in 2014 in memory of his mother alongside his wife Evonne and friend Scott Henderson.

Now Alan, who works as a senior hospital sales specialist, has been given a Volunteer Superhero award by his employer, pharmaceutical company Roche in recognition of his achievements.

As one of only six UK employees to be awarded the Superhero status, Alan says he’s delighted.

“I’m very proud of it,” he told The Falkirk Herald.

“The point of the award is to recognise the work that employees do outside their day job while still using the skills they have built up with Roche to give something back to the community.”

The Margo Young Foundation, named after Alan’s mum who died in 1992 of breast cancer, works with the Marie Curie Hospice in Glasgow to offer bereavement support and respite to children and young people who have suffered a loss.

Thanks to the foundation, 50 families have now received vital support through referrals from social work, schools, GPs and other hospices.

Alan, who is a dad to Orla (4) and five-month-old Ethan, said: “The 50 families mark is a real milestone for us. The work we’re doing is essential to giving these young people a chance to rebuild their lives after a devastating loss.”
