Group of the Week: Nordic Walking Group

Before the opening of the Helix the specially-built paths to get to the new site will be well worn thanks to organised groups who hold regular walks.

One of those is the Nordic Walking Group which meets every week to offer people a healthy way to explore the new facilities already in place.

Nordic walking uses specially designed poles to provide a full body workout that will strengthen your back, train your core, tone your body and help you lose weight and the new paths at Helix South are ideal for this type of walking.

The walks are led by experts and can be done by anyone and organisers run taster courses for beginners with equipment provided.

Organiser Barbara McConnell said: “This particular type of walking was introduced in Finland to ease the nation’s health problems and it was very successful. It basically teaches you how to work out while you’re walking. One of the group has lost over three stone since she took it up.”
