Grangemouth soldier inspiring young people to consider the army

Craftsman Rebecca McCreadie (23), who is based in Maryhill Barracks in Glasgow, recently took part in an innovative recruiting event at Braehead Shopping Centre designed to get those aged 16 to 24 to start thinking seriously about making the Army their employer.

Rebecca joined the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) as a vehicle mechanic six years ago and was happy to get involved in the new recruitment campaign.

She said: “It was a fun day. I loved being able to talk about my time in the Army because it has changed my life so much for the better. It was the best thing I have ever done.

“I feel more confident, have lots of friends and I am really proud of all I have achieved. During my time in the Army I have done some amazing things – adventure training in Kenya, being based in Germany for two years and going on exercise all over the world.

“I would certainly never have been able to do this had I not joined the Army.”

The new campaign, entitled A Better You, focuses heavily on the real experiences of existing soldiers like Rebecca and how they have learned new skills and gained new qualifications.

Participants at the Braehead event were invited to take part in a number of physical and mental challenges throughout the day – some which involved the virtual technology Gear VR headsets and saw participants have a go at parachute jumps, urban combat training and even a tank assault.
