Popular Grangemouth takeaway La Gondola has bagged The Falkirk Herald Chip Shop of the Year title for 2015.

For over 40 years the chip shop has been owned and operated by the Renella and Notarangelo families and current owners, husband and wife Samanda and John Cumming and brother-in-law Massimo D’Alvito, were overjoyed to continue the fine family tradition as chippy champs.

Samanda said: “We heard there was a lot of competition this year so we weren’t sure how well we would do. We just want to thank our customers for all their support.

“I’ve been here on and off since I was 13-years-old, so you become well-known to customers and they become well-known to you.

“We would be asking our regulars to vote for us and then find out they had already done it.”

Samanada’s parents Gino and Gloria Notarangelo took over the premises in 1990 from Gloria’s dad Carlo Renella, who had been running the business for decades under the name Carlo’s Fish and Chicken Bar.

Gino and Gloria took the name La Gondala from a restaurant Carlo used to run in nearby Kerse Road.

Samanda said she, John and Massimo were proud to carry on the shop’s good reputation established through the hard work of her papa and parents and also to win Chip Shop of the Year, a title which her parents earned for the business on three occasions in the late 1990s.

The Falkirk Herald Chip Shop of the Year 2015 was launched in February during National Chip Week and customers were asked to nominate their favourite chippy.

Entrants were then shortlisted and the merits of the most popular “plaices” were then chewed over before the final decision was made.

La Gondola will receive a plaque for their window and a certificate to mark their success.
