Fundraising begins for gala day's big return

Bonnybridge Gala is on course for a grand comeback next year and organisers are now raising funds to make it happen.

The big day stopped running in 2003, but last year a Facebook group, Bonnybridge Banter, began a campaign to bring it back and the 11-strong Bonnybridge Gala Day committee was formed last November.

Events will be taking place over the next few months to support the gala and an Easter Fair, held last weekend, raised over £2000 for the cause.

Emily Cowan, gala committee secretary, said: “It was amazing to see so many local companies come together and offer their services, and to the local fire service that sent one of their engines for the local kids and adults to live their dream for a moment.”

The event, which took place in Bonnybridge Community Centre on Sunday afternoon, featured 20 market stalls, face painting, a fire engine, egg painting, an Easter bunny and Easter bonnet competition and a bouncy castle.

Chairman Arlene Graham added: “Thanks to all the residents of Bonnybridge and their friends for their support and assistance in holding our first fundraiser. Thanks also to Councillor Linda Gow, who was kind enough to judge our Easter Bonnet competition, and provide a gift for the runners up.”

Councillor Billy Buchanan revealed this week that he and his colleagues were planning to take part in a sponsored walk following the Easter break to raise funds for the gala day.
