Funding boost for carers' support service in Falkirk

The cash has sustained the ability to offer trips to local sites of interest.

The project has made an impact on tenants and their families as well as many other older people.

Based at Bield’s Thornhill Court development, the service was in danger of closing.

Running every Tuesday and Wednesday, the service has secured more than £17,000 to allow those who attend to enjoy themed socials such as craft evenings or quiz nights or to get out and about to see places of local interest whilst their carers enjoy valuable rest time.

Activities as simple as going for a fish supper, going to the pub for a game of darts or a walk in the evening can be an essential social outlet and the support service helps tenants to live their lives in the way they want.

Evening support has helped older people to remain an active part of the community with a number of social activities and visits to landmarks such as the Kelpies and tennis star Andy Murray’s Olympic golden post box in Dunblane.

Angie Shanks, resource manager at Thornhill Court, said: “The service enables older people to remain part of the local community by visiting local attractions and venues and meeting up with people in local pubs, restaurants, theatres and cinemas.

“For many, it’s a wonderful opportunity, not only because it allows carers a wee bit of respite but those using the service have the opportunity to meet new people and strong friendships have developed.’’
