A big-hearted family went the distance to raise a massive £7500 for cancer charities on an 11-mile trek.

Margie Duncan, a nurse from Falkirk, and 70 of her friends and family walked from Linlithgow to the Falkirk Wheel along the Forth & Clyde Canal in memory of her sister Jane McGuire who died of breast cancer last June aged 42.

They did the same route last year to raise money to send June and her son Ramone, now seven, on holiday and they plan to make the successful fundraiser an annual event for good causes.

The Driving Force charity, which helped take Jane to and from hospital appointments, received £2500, as did Strathcarron Hospice and Breakthrough Cancer.

Margie said: “The walk is great fun. Everyone dresses up and the people we meet along the way are very supportive and join in.

“We would all like to thank everyone who donated and took part.”

Dr Bridget McCalister of Driving Force, which provides free transportation to patients, said: “This was a fantastic achievement and we are very grateful for the donation.

“It will make a big difference to us.”
