Football fans can pitch in to help Shire

East Stirlingshire FC's youth set-up is doing well but the pitch they are supposed to play on has had a rough time of it recently.

The pitch at Glensburgh in Grangemouth’s Old Town suffered £12,000 of damage last year when contractors employed by EE left the ground a ploughed up mess after a temporary metal road was put down to give diggers and trucks access to a phone mast that had to be removed.

The latest setback came when the recovering pitch was gouged yet again by a thoughtless motorcyclist riding all over it.

Shire chairman Tony Ford, who also has a battle on his hands coping with Parkinson’s Disease, is now trying to cancel out the ill fortune which seems to have dogged the pitch at Glensburgh.

After no compensation came from EE, Tony had to pay out £14,000 of his own cash to get the playing surface ship shape and is even considering auctioning off his prized collection of match shirts to raise funds.

He said: “The money has been spent and the pitch is level at the moment and looking lush so hopefully we’ll be able to get things moving in spring.

“However, some kind of financial help would be much appreciated. All these young guys want to do is play football and we’re making sure they can do that.”
