Falkirk students make it a family affair

A dad and daughter duo scooped two of the top prizes at Forth Valley College’s 
graduation ceremony.

Daniel Campbell (54) and daughter Laura (24) won the most promising student awards, Daniel in construction and Laura in creative 

The pair were presented with their prizes at the Stirling Castle ceremony last week. Over 700 students completed 55 courses this year, with 230 of them choosing to collect their scrolls at the graduation.

Father of three Daniel, of Dennyloanhead, now plans to start a furniture restoration business after completing an HND in the subject.

He said: “The Stirling Castle setting for our graduation was just amazing. Between the two of us we have invested a lot of time to get to this stage and it has certainly paid off.”

Laura, who now lives in Larbert, will complete her honours year at Stirling University after gaining a BA in media and communication from the college.

She said: “I feel really humbled that I have been nominated for this award. I am also very proud of what my dad has achieved at the college - we certainly encouraged and inspired each other through our studies.”

Denny student Barry Frame (29) received an outstanding achievement award for his work in gaining an HND in sound production, and Catherine Young (25) of Falkirk, was named most promising student in the department of health care and sport.

Allan Balfour (47) was named most outstanding student in engineering award, while Kris Bathgate, who lives in Bainsford, received the Ivan Hanley Award after graduating with an HND in computer technology support.

Forth Valley College principal Dr Ken Thomson said: “All of this year’s graduation prizewinners have worked extremely hard throughout the course of their studies and have been a credit to themselves and to the college. I wish them all the best in their future careers and am confident they will make a success of whatever they choose to do.”
