A talented chef created an out of this world design by sculpting the famous Star Wars fighter ship the Millenium Falcon out of fat.

Barry Fleming (42), from Tamfourhill, entered his labour of love, which took three weeks to sculpt, into the prestigious Hotelympia Salon Culinaire competition at Excel London – the largest food service and hospitality event in the UK – earlier this month.

Barry, who works for Compass ESS feeding squaddies at Edinburgh’s Redford Barracks, put the display together in his spare room.

It took around 20 hours of his spare time, but it wasn’t the first sculpture he’s produced. Two years ago he produced a Spitfire for a Salon Culinaire competition in Motherwell.

Barry said: “I had to hire a van to transport the sculpture down to London which was the most nervous drive I have had in a long time.

“Two years ago I sculpted a Spitfire for a competition in Motherwell and during transport from Edinburgh to Motherwell the tail fell off the plane so I’m sure you can imagine how I felt about an eight-hour drive to London.

“However, we did get it there in one piece as I had to make external supports for the journey and a dust/dirt free box to store it in.”

Barry said visitors and judges admired his creation, with many taking selfies with it when it was on display and, while it wasn’t a winner, it received a merit of achievement.

Barry added: “I wanted to push boundaries with it and takes things to another level by putting lights inside. I’m really proud of it and everyone who saw it at the competition loved it and wanted to have their pictures taken with it.”
