Enterprising Rowan says '˜thanks' to hospital staff

For a month following the drama in March, the ten-year-old made regular trips with her mum, Renatta (44) and big brother Oran (15) to the Burns Unit at Glasgow Royal Infirmary where Colin Brockie (47) was being treated.

Each visit made her more grateful to the nurses for the care he was receiving - and more determined to do something to show her appreciation.

The enterprising P6 pupil at Comely Park School then hit on the idea to raise money for the hospital by raiding her toy box to create novel keyrings using bits and pieces from old board games to sell.

Her delicate trinkets including button rings, keyrings, pet tags and cufflinks crafted from Scrabble letters and pieces of Lego at the family home in George Street, Falkirk, proved a huge hit with classmates, family and friends.

By the start of the school holidays Rowan had raised over £500 from the venture - and the figure is still growing.

Rowan intends to donate the money to the Burns Unit and Isa McSorley Endowment Fund at the hospital.

She said: “The nurses and doctors looked after my dad really well and I just wanted to do something as a ‘thank you’ for helping him and being so kind.”

Her delighted mum added: “We are super proud of her. She has worked really hard on the project and the support it has attracted has overwhelmed us.”
