Braes High dux winner aiming high in life

Becoming the dux of a high school takes intelligence, dedication and sacrifice, but the hard work isn’t over quite yet for young Adam Smith.

The 16-year-old from Polmont earned Braes High School’s highest honour for 2015 and revealed he’s got his sights set high for a high-flying career after he leaves school next year.

To achieve his ambitions he is aiming to study at either Edinburgh or Cambridge universities, two of the most prestigious in the UK. Before all that though the S5 pupil has got exams, which start on May 5, to study for and he’s not putting his feet up quite yet.

He will be swotting away over the next couple of weeks revising for his Mathematics, English, German, French, chemistry and physics exams that will get him those top grades.

Adam, who also does ballet, said: “It’s great to be the new dux, it’s a major honour and I’m really chuffed. My mum and dad are obviously really proud too.

“I’m aiming to study at Edinburgh or Cambridge so will need top grades to do that. It’s hard work studying but as long as you are prepared you can be pretty confident you will
 do well.”

Other winners of the big prizes on the night were Christopher Wheeler (Outstanding Sporting Achievement), Fraser Strang (Smillie Award for Overcoming Barriers to Learning), Andrew Angus (Anne Speirs Cup for Contribution to the School), Holly Riach and Mark Scott (Robertson Trophy – Rector’s Prize), and Holly Riach and Sean Johnston (Class ’98 Excellence Award).

Guest speaker was John Carnochan, a former top detective and hostage negotiator, who has worked with young people in some of the most deprived communities in Britain.

Head teacher Helen McCulloch, who gave her last speech at the awards ceremony as she is retiring after 11 years at the helm, said: “I would like to congratulate all our prizewinners and thank them for their hard work and the contributions they have made to the school. Without their enthusiasm, life would be much duller
at Braes.

“At every age and stage, every level of ability, they make huge contributions to their school and community.”
