Crowds turn out for war memorial dedication

The names of over 260 men from Camelon who fell in the service of their country during the First World War are now displayed on the towering steel cenotaph which stands close to Lock 16 on the Forth and Clyde canal.

More than ten years since the project was first conceived, the design by former Forth Valley College student Shirley Ann McMillan, was unveiled by Depute Lord Lieutenant Colonel Alastair Campbell.

It followed a parade through the village led by Camelon Pipe Band and including civic dignitaries, representatives from the Armed Forces, uniformed organisations, old soldiers and members of the community.

Doves of peace were also released and the flag was raised by Camelon’s oldest resident, veteran Walter Sharp (102) before the wreath laying ceremony.

Provost Pat Reid then gave the Kohima epitaph - ‘When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow we gave our today’.
